Older devices do not have to
stay excluded from the data flow

Bring data acquisition close to the machine and connect existing interfaces with your IT.

Serial ports, different device generations and ambient conditions make a direct server connection difficult. The right hardware has to suit both the data source and the place of use.

IQstruct Engineering selects robust industrial PCs and supplementary interface adapters. Depending on the environment, fanless devices are used. The edge layer acquires data on the shop floor and transmits them to agreed servers or applications. Local buffering can be provided for connection interruptions.

In a free first conversation we clarify how many values arrive per second, what is to be computed on site and how long the hardware has to stay available.

Scope of services

Select hardware by place of use

Ports and ambient conditions determine the choice of device.

Integrate serial sources

RS-485 adapters provide access to Modbus RTU devices, for example.

Coordinate transmission and operation

Network connection, storage requirements and service are planned with the overall system.

Data acquisition close to the machine

IQstruct Engineering selects robust industrial PCs and supplementary interface adapters, fanless depending on the environment.

The edge layer acquires data on the shop floor and transmits them to agreed servers or applications. Selection, provision, installation and configuration of the hardware are part of the scope.

Separate network ports support the connection of production and office areas. Routing and permitted communication are defined for this, and storage requirements and buffering are coordinated with the data rate and target system. The edge device thus becomes part of a planned and documented system connection.

Existing plants

Older devices deliver their data again

Serial ports and earlier device generations are integrated into the data flow via suitable adapters.

Approach in the project

  1. Three people compare industrial PCs and gateways at a table, a comparison on the laptopAi

    1

    Select edge technology

Gateways, industrial PCs and network requirements are determined by place of use.

  2. A technician sets up the gateway and industrial PC on the screen while a colleague plugs in a network cableAi

    2

    Configure devices

Gateway and industrial PC are set up at the technical workstation.

  3. Two people install equipment in an open control cabinet beside a conveyor system in a production hallAi

    3

    Install edge technology

The device is installed on the production plant and connected.

  4. Three people in a meeting room discuss a dashboard with power curves, energy balance and an asset tableAi

    4

    Check incoming energy data

Current values, timestamps and trends arrive in the dashboard and are checked.

Experience from research

Synchronised data acquisition

In the research project DataSynch4BaSys, the synchronised acquisition of industrial data was investigated and connected with an industrial IoT platform.

Edge technology on excavators

In the research project Off-Highway Twins 2, edge technology transmitted data streams from LiDAR, 3D cameras and virtual sensors via MQTT to a cloud environment.

Edge hardware and our own middleware

Robust industrial PCs and protocol converters form the edge layer.

Depending on the task, acquisition runs on an industrial PC or on small DIN rail hardware; serial meters and measuring devices are connected over RS-485. Besides data source and protocol, temperature, power supply, mounting place and the achievable data rate all count. We agree which processing runs locally and which data the target system needs. Buffering, updates and a later device replacement are planned in as well. An existing platform is checked against these requirements for its further use.

Project experience

Energy data monitoring at a brick works

Looking at energy and production together at a backing brick works.

IQstruct Engineering has delivered energy data monitoring for a backing brick works. The solution brings together values from transformer stations, the photovoltaic system and the combined heat and power plant with production data. Consumption can therefore be viewed in relation to the batches produced. Meter trends are available individually, aggregated and historically. The example shows why a single meter reading does not yet provide a reliable statement about the energy demand of a production step.

Frequently asked questions

We are glad to answer your detailed questions in a personal conversation.

Does an adapter replace the entire protocol processing?

An interface adapter provides the physical access. The software on the edge device handles the processing of the protocol.

Do two network ports separate production and office securely?

Two network ports support the connection of both areas. A secured network separation additionally requires defined routing and regulated communication.

Do you also handle the installation?

Yes. Selection, provision, installation and configuration of the edge hardware are part of the scope.
